EXZOLT®

EXZOLT®, a product from MSD, is an effective and safe means of controlling red mites (blood lice).

The active substance is Fluralaner (10 mg/ml) and the product is water soluble.

EXZOLT® can be used with birds, but is currently only registered for poultry in Europe. No side effects are observed with a 5-fold overdose.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The bird absorbs EXZOLT® through its drinking water, and the active agent (Fluralaner) enters the bird's bloodstream. The red mites suck the blood and the Fluralaner acts on the receptors in the nervous system of the mites, causing them to drop dead a few hours after a meal.
EXZOLT® only combats the blood-sucking stages of the red mite. In order to break the cycle of these ectoparasites, it is important to repeat the treatment at appropriate times (see administration).
In case of a massive infestation, it is essential to also treat the surrounding area with an effective insecticide because the hidden red mites have not yet taken a meal.

HOW TO RECOGNISE IT
During the day red mites hide in holes and cracks, between the wood and shelves of the birdcage, under the nesting material, among other places. They only come out at night when the birds are asleep. They take their chance on the perch, but also on the walls and ceiling, and walk up to the bird to get a blood meal.

For birds, red mites are a tragedy:

What is bothering the birds?

What is the result?

Itching, irritation and pecking at themselves

Stress, restlessness and poor sleep.
Damaged and bad plumage.
Nocturnal itching often causes eggs to be laid outside the nest.
Sometimes, the female even leaves the nest.

Anaemia

Only a few red mites can cause anaemia.
Unexplained death in the nest of young birds.

General ill feeling

Less vital and tired birds.
In case of severe infestations: fewer eggs, cease laying.

Purpose

Controlling red mites, such as blood lice and other ectoparasites in birds.

Administration

  • Administer drinking water containing 0.5 ml EXZOLT® (= 15 drops) per litre of drinking water for one day and repeat after one week. In this way, we obtain an effect lasting 2 to 3 months.
  • Preventive treatment: repeat this treatment after two months (again 2 treatments with an interval of 1 week).
  • In the event of an outbreak, also treat the surrounding area with an effective insecticide.
  • The product remains stable in water for 24 hours, so make a fresh solution each time.
  • No other source of drinking water (including bath water) should be present during the treatment period.
  • Do not combine with other medicines or supplements in the same water.
  • EXZOLT® can be used safely during breeding, even in newborn birds. (Waiting time eggs 0 days, meat 14 days).
